Our Story …

Mathew and Bridget are really pleased to announce that we're taking part in Shitbox Rally Spring 2024! This year, all the teams are driving their Shitboxes from Bendigo to Townsville for 7 days!

We mainly drive on roads less travelled and a mixture of sealed and dirt. If the car makes it, we are then able to auction the car as a final part of the fund raising or pay $250 to keep it for the next one!

There are two conditions of entry, the 2wd car must be valued at no more than $1,500 and each team must raise at least $5,000. We are asking for everyone’s support for a cause that touches everyone and give the road trip even more purpose.

Our entry is called Team Wonki and we have now bought our Wonki ute. It’s a Holden Rodeo 1999 which is the same age as Bridget and is manual so Bridget learns how to drive a manual car! So far she can’t change out of first gear and reverse is still a lottery, so as long as we stay in first we’ll be ok. It’s a ripper and I will have it roadworthy soon.

Shitbox Rally is the largest community lead fundraiser for Cancer Council in Australia and is now in its 14th year, the Spring 2024 rally target is set at $2,000,000 plus.

These funds go to Cancer Council and we are extremely proud to be doing our part to support such a worthy charity. The fundraising is the hard part, so any donation you can give is greatly appreciated. Check out our progress to the start line through our socials which Bridget will look after.

If anyone wants to sponsor us then you need to contact me as there are a few extra steps to do this.

Here's what I'm doing …

Shitbox Rally is the adventure of a lifetime challenging participants and their cars, worth no more than $1,500, on a 7 day drive across Australia to raise money for cancer research.

The rally is not a race – it’s a fun, colourful, unpredictable adventure with participants travelling at their own pace in smaller groups. Vehicles often break down but “we never leave anyone behind” and each night is spent camping beneath the stars and celebrating the day’s achievements. It all adds up to an incredible opportunity to see Australia’s vast and beautiful countryside and make lifelong friends, many brought together after experiencing cancer themselves or seeing cancer impact family and friends.

Since it’s inception the rally has been the largest fundraiser for the Cancer Council nationally.

I have heard from a friend who has done this and I am jealous. I see it in my future. Good luck, although I expect after the vehicle has been "Lansellised", it will likely resemble a new Land Cruiser.

Thanks Simon, it can only be Lansellised on the safety items!

We've had a busy week and got a few things done. Serviced the engine, donated tyres arrived very generously from Highway Tyres in Moorabbin and installed the UHF radio. Last week we stripped out the LPG tank and all its operating gear so now it runs better with less restriction. Next week we should get a RWC and we are nearly ready to roll.

Most exciting news is that we have reached our first fund raising target of $2,500. This means we get our shitbox stickers for the bonnet and doors! But we are not done yet as the next target is $5,000.

We achieved another milestone this week. We got the road worthy first time around, rego transferred and new plates put on. Bridget and I went for our first bunny hop around the block which was exciting and also how they really don't know any of the features of a manual car!

The Impact, Outcomes & Charity

Shitbox Rally is a dedicated fundraising event for cancer research with funds going to Cancer Council.

Cancer Council is one of the largest non-government funders of cancer research in Australia. We conduct and fund research studies across all cancers and all stages of the cancer journey.

Thanks to the community funds raised such as Shitbox Rally we can fund world-class research that reduces the impact of cancer for everyone.

$41 million over the past 13 years has been raised by Box Rallies to date, supporting ground-breaking projects such as:

 • A research study to develop a vaccine that protects against lymphoma cancers.
 • A research trial to standardise international guidelines on melanoma removal.
 • A research grant to revolutionise the treatment of pancreatic cancer.

These projects wouldn’t be possible without your support.
